The OPP are warning drivers to avoid non-essential travel tonight as a winter storm bears down on southwestern Ontario.
Thundersnow, a rare phenomenon, is a winter storm where instead of rain, snow is the main form of precipitation — and includes thunder and lightning. Kingston recently saw thundersnow in late January during one of the city’s biggest snowstorms of the season.WestJet says it has proactively cancelled all scheduled flights operating to and from Toronto Pearson Airport as of 8 p.m. EST this evening, until Saturday morning.
Air Canada also warned customers to check their flight status before leaving for the airports in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.planned weekend subway closures Some of the routes and corridors that will see increased service are in places such as Scarborough, the west end of Toronto and North York. The transit agency said corridors include Jane Street, Finch Avenue West, Dufferin Street, Lawrence Avenue east and west, and Markham Road. ALine 3 Scarborough SRT will be closed at 7 p.m. and replaced with shuttle buses. The TTC said storm trains will run along the line to allow for it to open as soon as possible on Saturday.
The TTC also said private contractor tow trucks will be available to help any stuck vehicles, while the transit agency’s snow-clearing equipment will be deployed as the weather moves in.York University campuses will be suspending operations as of 5:30 p.m., the school said in a tweet. “Evening, in-person, activities are cancelled. Virtual activities and services continue. Updates about the overnight operations will be posted by 6 p.m.
