Jody Wilson-Raybould says despite her “sounding the alarm” about the Indigenous experience in Canada, the federal government has failed to make meaningful changes.

Wilson-Raybould, who was welcomed by her Kwak’wala name Puglaas, slammed the federal government and called for “a new political culture,” revised policies on Indigenous self-government and recognition of Indigenous rights and title. She commended the First Nation Justice Council for its work on developing a provincewide First Nations justice strategy with the B.C. government, and called for “boldness, courage and a vigorous agenda for change from all of us.”

Wilson-Raybould, MP for Vancouver-Granville, said when first elected to parliament, she carried with her “a belief that how we govern ourselves as Indigenous people carried important lessons which Crown governments would do well to learn from.”“Canada’s justice system has historically had a role in perpetuating injustice for Indigenous people,” said Wilson-Raybould. “Within our oral traditions there is paramountcy that we must place upon the truth.

Doug White, head of the justice council, a group with a dual mandate of dealing with the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in jails and of children in care, said the two federal leaders were selected to speak because they “exemplified a kind of commitment to the rule-of-law that really resonates.”
