ANALYSIS: Will Mark McGowan's latest bold move leave a positive legacy, or be seen as a power trip?
This week's decision to give developers the power to more frequently bypass local governments to approve their projects is just another to add to that list.
It's naturally raised eyebrows, given the money that flows between developers and political parties of all persuasions — a link the government was quick to dismiss. That's a concern shared by Greens MP Brad Pettitt, who would know a thing or two about local government planning, having been Fremantle's mayor for 12 years before entering parliament.
"It's taken away from local decision making. It is the role of local government to represent the views of its members. It's called local government for a reason," WA Local Government Association President Karen Chappel said this week.
