Brisbane City Council has confirmed at least some of the wild peafowl that have long roamed the leafy streets of Bardon have been forcibly relocated.
understands a group of the distinctive-looking peacocks and peahens were captured, and four relocated to an animal welfare facility.“There is a wild peacock and peahen population in some parts of Brisbane, but the reality is not everyone wants to share their suburb with the non-native and noisy bird,” civic cabinet chair for city standards Kim Marx said on Friday.
“While they can be quite beautiful and considered lucky in some cultures, they also cause a lot of noise, a lot of droppings and damage people’s cars and homes by roosting on them. “Following resident complaints about the peacock presence in Bardon, council worked with a bird expert this week to take the birds to a new home.”However, some Bardon bird-lovers were angered by the move, and believe the council had been deliberately secretive.
Local resident Jon Fihelly said he suspected all the peahens had been taken away from the peacocks to hasten the demise of the population. “I’ve put it to them [council] they are reacting to the 10 or so peafowl in Bardon as if they have an outbreak or the like,” Fihelly said.The previous rapid growth of theBrisbane also has wild populations of
