Indonesian President Joko Widodo has joined Anthony Albanese to strongly deplore Russia’s war against Ukraine and, in a message aimed at China, declared support for a region “free from coercion”.
During their joint remarks to the media, Mr Albanese confirmed the two leaders discussed regional security, but did not elaborate other than to endorse plans to upgrade defence ties to treaty level, and reiterated that all countries, big and small, had a collective responsibility to keep the region peaceful.
The outcome goes much further than last year’s statement after Mr Albanese’s first meeting with Mr Widodo. Held in June just three weeks after winning the election, it was devoid of such strong language. Former Australian ambassador to Indonesia Gary Quinlan said the communiqué reflected Indonesia’s desire to play a more active role as it chairs the Association of South East Asian Nations this year “in a region where risks are clearly sharper”.
The $50 million is the first tranche of the $200 million Australia-Indonesia Climate and Infrastructure Partnership, and will see Canberra contribute to small-scale Indonesian investment funds to support Indonesia SMEs undertake clean energy, climate technology and climate change projects.Mr Widodo and the leaders’ communiqué said climate capture and storage would be eligible for funding.
