Dean Parkin has hit out at the 'inward-looking' Canberra bubble's approach to the Voice debate in an exclusive interview with Sky News Australia, as his mother revealed why he's not eyeing up a tilt at politics.

“I would grant land rights,” Dean wrote, according to his mother Evelyn who’s recounting the story as we sit above Main Beach on North Stradbroke Island.“This little child comes home and tells me this and I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, where is he going to end up? What is he going to end up doing?’”

“We used words like faith and hope and love in the way that it was crafted, in the way that it was issued to the Australian people,” he says. Parkin says the whole purpose of the Voice is about creating practical change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Albanese Government and pro-Voice advocates have been accused of failing to provide adequate detail about what the proposal is and how it will operate.“We're talking about a representative body made up of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, chosen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” he says.

“In the last couple of years since I've been back on country, I've known what it's actually felt like to be here on a day-to-day basis. It's been life-changing, to be honest with you, to be connected to country.”“When you know about Aboriginal people, they are connected to Mother Earth,” she says.
