Union president Chris Aylward is asking for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to get directly involved in settling the dispute.
Aylward declined to say where his union, which had previously been demanding a 13.5-per-cent pay raise over three years, was now, but he“The prime minister has one of two choices to make: He can either get involved personally and help settle this dispute, or he can turn his back on the workers.”
When the government announced workers would be mandated to return to the office two to three days per week, message boards and Reddit groups exploded with complaints. Workers argued they were being forced back into the office to help downtown Ottawa businesses with no consideration for how they had performed during the pandemic.
Patrick Groom, a labour lawyer and partner with McMillian LLP, said including work-from-home language would lead to thousands of ongoing disputes as thousands of individual employees file grievances demanding to return to their home offices. Government officials who spoke on background with the National Post said the number of grievances they would face is a major concern, but they’re also worried about an erosion in services supplied to Canadians. They believe there is genuine benefit in having workers in the office, even just a few days a week, to collaborate.
