As we learnt in the early weeks of COVID-19, early childhood educators are an essential cog in the wheel of our communities, families, workplaces and economy.

If early childhood educators don’t turn up to work, many other essential workers can’t turn up to their work.

A certificate III qualified educator starts on $23.39 per hour, and a centre director, a role often degree-qualified, starts at $35.17 per hour. The average weekly take-home pay for a full-time educator is $1059 a week. This is problematic and hard to reconcile with the anticipated productivity bump from the long-awaited fee relief for families coming on July 1.

One in eight workers in Australia have children under the age of five; for many of them, getting to work is not possible if there’s no early learning and care.
