“We’ve got the people, now we need the jobs,” he says. “If we can get residences and jobs somewhere parallel, Box Hill will be a successful city.”To achieve that, Shi also thinks Box Hill needs more structured open space that can be used for recreation and events – like its own version of Federation Square.
“I’ll be frank, I struggle to see the real benefits [of the Suburban Rail Loop] for our residents right now,” he says. “It’s going to be a challenge,” he says. “For us, it’s ‘hang on a minute. We’ve actually done a pretty damn good job’. We believe our strategy is working for Box Hill; it’s growing, it’s becoming more vibrant.
“We don’t want to presume the outcome of what goes on in each of those places before we’ve had the opportunity to work with councils and communities,” Allan says.
