BOSS Young Executive and chief financial officier at Delta Agribusiness Matt Freeman used to think he didn’t get stressed often. A loss in the family helped him understand how people’s personal lives influence their work.

My wife and I are currently doing intermittent fasting, which basically means I skip breakfast. I’ll usually just have a long black in the morning to start the day. Having started a new job with Delta this year I found it harder to get to the gym because I was devoting every minute of the day to work. I had every intention of getting up an hour earlier every day to go to the gym but that didn’t happen so this is the compromise: I exercise less so I’m eating less.

I’ve become a lot more aware of where my headspace is and how stress manifests in different ways. Somebody talked to me recently about having a courage bank so that every time you go through a stressful situation you take that experience and put it in your courage bank. While the pandemic had the benefit of showing us we can work more flexibly, I like to be in the office as much as I can so people know I’m available. The face-to-face interactions and the water cooler conversations are so important because it opens up the opportunity to ask, ‘are you OK?’ I think being present and accessible is such an important aspect of being a good leader.
