Parts of a ship that was beached in 1854 have recently been seen in Tasmania's north-west. While it may not contain hidden treasures, it does offer priceless information.
The story of The Alert is one well shared in this remote corner of Tasmania.Michael Walsh has owned a shack there for 40 years. The best view he's ever had of the wreck was when it was completely uncovered in 2003, attracting media outlets and scores of people eager to get a glimpse.
"It was a high sea right up to the foot of the sand dunes and it was floating up and back with each wave," he said. The Alert was completely uncovered in 2003, shedding light on Australia's rich shipbuilding history from the 1800s. "Everyone knows when The Alert is out and goes and has a bit of a look around," Mr Walsh said.Mike Nash, a maritime archaeologist and heritage officer with the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, said that although this corner of Tasmania was well-known for its wild weather, it took the perfect set of conditions to uncover the wreck.
"There were very big storms on the west coast in 2016 for about six weeks and that uncovered a huge amount of sand on the beach and uncovered a large section of the wreck," he said.
