Creating a will is easy, but talking to your loved ones about its contents can be challenging. Here’s how to ensure your wishes are carried out, according to an estate planning lawyer

Conversations about the legacy we’d like to leave when we’re gone are rare.

But life is unpredictable, and taking the time to understand and communicate our final wishes is vitally important – even if it’s uncomfortable., about creating a will that will leave a lasting legacy for the people and causes you care about.“There’s a great misconception out there that we don’t have to worry about [a will] until we’re older,” says Sloan. “[But] I always say anyone over the age 18 should have a will.

While most people divide their assets among their close family members and relatives, Sloan says she has observed a movement towards charitable donations or bequests being left to organisations and causes that her clients consider important. Sloan says it’s a good idea to ensure the most important people in your life – such as children and other dependants – are taken care of first. After that, you might consider leaving a residual gift to charities and causes close to your heart.

“It’s really, really important that it’s worded properly in the will,” Sloan says. That’s because it can be easy to confuse organisations and even people with similar names, which can open the door for claims. Unfortunately, not everyone has close relationships with their families, but in that situation it can be even more important to ensure your final wishes are clearly communicated. Especially if things aren’t going to be divided equally or there are people who won’t receive anything.
