Hospital equipment in Melbourne has been affected by 'electromagnetic interference' after test runs of the new Metro Tunnel. What is it and can it be fixed?
Following reports that sensitive medical equipment at Melbourne hospitals were being affected by trains in the city's new underground metro line, Premier Jacinta Allan was not surprised.
Wherever an electric current flows, a magnetic field is generated — the stronger the current, the stronger the magnetic field.The new Metro Tunnel project is producing electromagnetic interference.Electromagnetic interference occurs when a stray magnetic field from one source disrupts the operation of another device.
But the combination of strong magnetic fields and radio waves makes MRI machines a source of extremely high level electromagnetic emissions, and also makes them very susceptible to interference from external sources. Ms Pilcher said electrical interference could cause something known as an "artefact", which was a distortion or pattern interrupting the MRI image.
