Payback is the latest in a growing line of crime shows making good use of Scotland’s foreboding landscapes and evocative brogue.

In fact it may be the UK’s northernmost country’s very chilliness that has made it such a popular destination for hit program-makers of late: the foreboding landscapes and ominous grey skies of Scotland are perfect for generating the sort of atmosphere that makers of crime drama, in particular, are always after.

It does mean a lot for actors like Christie and Mullan to be able to work in their native land and in their own accents, with both having spent much of their careers travelling elsewhere and adopting all kinds of voices.
