Payback is the latest in a growing line of crime shows making good use of Scotland’s foreboding landscapes and evocative brogue.
Scotland is so hot right now. Well, not literally, of course. In fact it may be the UK’s northernmost country’s very chilliness that has made it such a popular destination for hit program-makers of late: the foreboding landscapes and ominous grey skies of Scotland are perfect for generating the sort of atmosphere that makers of crime drama, in particular, are always after.
It does mean a lot for actors like Christie and Mullan to be able to work in their native land and in their own accents, with both having spent much of their careers travelling elsewhere and adopting all kinds of voices. Doing a show likemust be a special experience on that front? “Yeah, absolutely,” says Christie. “Kind of rare for me, actually.” Mullan agrees. “Peter Mullan and Morven Christie in Payback.
“You’ve got one of the softest, friendliest faces I’ve ever seen. It’s just that when you play a baddie, you use your soft friendly face, and that make it scarier,” says Morven Christie of her Payback co-star Peter Mullan.is not specifically Scottish, Mullan certainly is, sticking up for his country in a voice that could come straight from the Battle of Culloden.
