Other major cities around the globe like Montréal have cellphone service underground on their public transit, so why do TTC riders still have to remain largely out of touch? Ask Bell, Rogers or Telus.
Toronto subway commuters know all too well where they have to fire off that urgent work email — whether it’s Rosedale or Keele stations, or that brief stretch between Castle Frank and Broadview — before the TTC dives underground again, cutting off all connection to the outside world.
All of Toronto’s subway stations, and all tunnels in the downtown U , are outfitted with cellular service and data, installed by BAI. “Toronto should consider the Montréal transit system model,” she added. “All carriers were allowed to participate in its wireless build out, and Montréal subway passengers have had wireless service since 2014.”
So far, the only carrier to sign on to BAI’s system on the TTC is Freedom Mobile, which has about six per cent of the Canadian market. Since 2015, Freedom customers have had access to cell service and 4G on the TTC.
