Battery materials giant Albemarle sees Western Australia as crucial to the electric vehicle ambitions of the United States, Europe and Asia, including China.
Eric Norris wants to build Western Australia into the reliable workhorse supplying a key lithium ingredient of electric vehicle batteries to China and the rest of the world.
Norris, Albemarle’s president of energy storage, spoke to reporter Brad Thompson for Carbon Challenge. Here is an edited transcript. We as an operator have access to some of the best mines in the world there in WA. And there’s a real efficiency in terms of the distance we’re moving rock, the ability to reclaim those mines with tailings, to be able to operate in-country, for the downstream hydroxide operation. And what’s more is that in today’s world, that’s IRA compliant product.
Well first of all, all of these regions that are large automobile production areas are going through a significant transition to not only build electric vehicles, but to help build the supply chains in their countries to reduce the supply time, lead times, the CO2 that gets involved in moving material around. Just reflect on what happened last year to automotive supply chains and how they started shutting down production lines because they didn’t have product near enough to them.
