The equation for the Wallabies to progress is more complicated than former maths teacher Eddie Jones would like. Even victory over Wales won’t guarantee avoiding the humiliation of a pool-stage exit.

When the 2023 Rugby World Cup draw was released in December 2020, Australian fans and senior officials could hardly believe their luck.

Almost three years on, a win against Wales on Sunday in Lyon might not be enough for Australia to make the last eight in France. The equation for the Wallabies to progress is more complicated than former maths teacher Eddie Jones would like.Firstly, bonus points. Halfback Tate McDermott admitted earlier in the week the Wallabies had talked about their significance. “We’re across that,” he said. “But we’re thinking about getting the victory first and foremost.”

If Wales were to lose to the Wallabies in Lyon, but snare two bonus points, Australia would still trail Wales with one game each remaining. Regular wins for the Wallabies in their two remaining Tests might not even be enough. If the Wallabies were to beat Wales without a bonus point, they’d go to 10 points. If Wales managed one bonus point in a close game, for example, they’d jump to 11 points.
