You only live once and sometimes a taste of luxury with friends and family is just what you need.

Several years ago, I stayed in a Venice palazzo that rented for €60,000 a night. Situated right on the lagoon, it contained 11 spacious apartments and featured a large garden. It came with a housekeeper and a butler. The villa had been previously rented to moguls like Rupert Murdoch and for film locations and corporate events. I was not a paying guest but lucky to be writing about it for a publication.

But one thing I’ve noticed is the willingness of people who wouldn’t consider themselves in the multi-millionaire category to spend big on a special occasion such as a significant birthday, wedding, engagement, family reunion, or simply for a group of friends to spend time together. I think the pent-up desire for travel we’re seeing right now is driven more by these things than from a need to look at monuments in Rome or eat a croissant in a Paris cafe. Life is transient; we have such a short time, and we may not always have it this good.

The advantage of exclusive use is the privacy this affords. If it’s an extravagant one-time blowout such as a 50th birthday, there’s the utter luxury of having staff on tap to cater to your every whim without other guests disturbing the festivities.Àni Sri Lanka
