Forte is a closer and wins his races from further back, often benefitting from a faster pace. If the race doesn’t get off to a quick start, however, Forte could struggle. Tapit Trice and Angel of Empire are both better options to win and they each pay more than Forte. Tapit Trice tends to start races at a slower pace before coming from behind and finishing strong. He likely won’t lead early, but his superior stamina should keep him in a good position down the final stretch. It also helps that he’s trained by Todd Pletcher, who has sent 62 horses to the Kentucky Derby in his career, including two winners., winning four of five career races, with one runner-up placement.
Verifying likes to get out of the gate quickly and grab hold of the rail. His top speed doesn’t completely measure up to some of the other elite horses, but his stamina and a strong closing burst should put him in a position to contend. Bank on Verifying finishing somewhere in the top three.. Skinner’s speed is a little higher than Verifying and he’s a top level closer. He has only won one of six career starts, but his strengths play better at a longer track like the 1 1/4 mile Kentucky Derby.
