This Aussie teenager was a 'nobody' when he arrived in Europe to kickstart his F1 dream. Then he achieved something amazing. 🤩 9WWOS AusGP F3

Barter first developed an interest in mechanics at the tender age of two when he began taking a screwdriver to his three-wheel scooter, despite having no idea what the hand tool did. This soon developed into a passion for motorsports when Barter got his first go-kart at five years old and his karting licence at seven.

"Who knows where I would be now if I didn't get that scholarship," Barter tells Wide World of Sports. Grabbing his chance with both hands, Barter had a successful first campaign in France, finishing second in the championship after claiming two wins - counting the first round - six podiums and five top-five finishes."When I was able to stick it on P2 in my first-ever qualifying, everybody was like, 'Oh, who's this?', and I kind of shocked myself as well."

Despite once again coming so close to a junior formula title, Barter is adamant he made the right call tackling the double and believes he is a better driver because of it."The French F4 is a federation where all the cars are run under the same team, whereas the Spanish F4 is more like a normal championship.

"There's not a stigma but there's a stereotype that you must go through so many years of F4, or one year of F4 and two years of Formula Regional before you move to F3," Barter said."People tend to think, 'You should have done this or you should have done that', and that's why when I qualified P5 in the first round it was a good way to stick it to the naysayers.

His first stop after touching down in Melbourne was also to his old high school to thank the principal who was one of his biggest supporters before he left for Europe.
