Former Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters, who resigned from his position with the team in 2019 following allegations he previously used racial slurs and got physical with players, has been hired as the new head coach of the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League. Akim Aliu
Aliu went on to say instead of apologizing after the incident, Peters"did everything in his power to blackball me in the game for over a decade."
“After a thorough review, speaking with representatives from Shades of Humanity, and receiving a commitment from Bill to continue on his path of anti-racism, self-growth and redemption, the WHL is satisfied Bill is ready to return to coaching in the WHL,” WHL Commissioner Ron Robison said in statement. “The journey towards individual and systemic equity learning should be viewed as an ongoing process.
“I have worked closely with Shades of Humanity to understand and correct my regrettable actions,” Peters said in the release. “I have learned a lot through this educational journey and feel ready to return to coaching. I am in a unique position to guide our next generation of community leaders and to establish a more inclusive culture in hockey.”
In his letter of resignation from the Flames, Peters admitted to using “offensive” language, but called the incident “isolated and immediately regrettable.”
