Opinion: Don’t raise the Warragamba wall, lower the dam(n) water level | Susan Templeman
It’s raining again. On cue, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has re-announced raising the Warragamba dam wall, saying he is “fast-tracking” this controversial project.
For farmers it means balancing the risk of sowing a crop of vegetables or turf against yet another destructive and costly loss; for many businesses, whose suffering continues long after floodwaters subside, it’s a matter of asking “how much longer can I do this”; for families on the Hawkesbury-Nepean floodplain, it’s the question “will it get me again?” or “will it get me this time?” This floodplain covers 425 square kilometres, so it’s not just homes with water views that flood.
Some would like that buffer set at 12 metres below the current maximum, which would mean filling the dam to no more than about 60 per cent of capacity. Others want a five-metre drop, which would take it to 82 per cent.
