“Apparently we’re all God’s children, so where is he?” Robyn asks in her narration. “Just another drop-dead dad.” But when she tracks down her ailing grandfather, Ringer , Robyn learns more about the father she’s never met, setting off a journey from her remote community that sees her crossing paths with a taxi driver who specialises in sex trafficking, Maxine , a sham preacher, Robert , and his eager-to-escape son, Gidge .
The show’s frankness spans the farcical to the telling, such as Robert slyly selling “sacramental wine” in a supposedly dry Aboriginal township, but it’s always played with a light hand that allows for mocking music cues and near-miss cliffhangers. The wheels are always turning as the plot literally heads south, but it manages to find a genuine emotional core in its young absconders. “You’re an idiot,” is the first thing Robyn says to Gidge, but he wins her over.
The broader question of why certain players’ teams stumbled, and the role they may have played in that, tends to get sidelined by noble failure. For me, the best parts are the tangents, such as some of James’ lofty self-reflection, and the supporting cast. There is a lot of doting father content, including Jayson Tatum being disappointed about playing on Christmas Day, but the antidote is Domantas Sabonis’ wife Shashana.
