Astro lives on its own merits but if we were to compare, we'd say the game offers the pure, joyful Super Mario-like experience on a PlayStation platformshouldn’t be as successful as it is, yet here we are, talking about why it deserves to win the gaming industry’s most coveted award. And I say that not because I don’t like the game — quite the opposite, in fact — but because it seemingly had the odds stacked against it.
Most of us expected it to be just a lighthearted romp that we would pick up, play, and forget about in a month. But the game proved to be so much more than that, delivering one of, if not, the best 3D platforming experiences in modern gaming. It’s an imaginative dozen-or-so-hour adventure that delights from start to finish, while also serving up a wonderful tribute to the history of PlayStation. ’s release couldn’t have come at a worse time.
It’s also incredibly refreshing that in a time when developers and publishers are devising new ways to monetize games as much as they can, here’sdropping content updates for free. Who doesn’t love free content updates? And as I was writing this, Team Asobi, the game’s developer, announced it’s releasing a winter-themed level as sort of a Christmas-slash-thank-you gift for all those who bought the game. That’s a huge win in my book.
