If QB Jimmy Garoppolo can’t play well on injured foot, and Raiders’ Plan B is Tom Brady, if he’s willing, that’d have to happen by August.
OK, but what if Brady should choose to unretire to play for the Raiders BEFORE a finance-committee vote on his ownership slice of the Raiders can take place?It was reported on the weekend that Jimmy Garoppolo — the Raiders’ intended starting quarterback for 2023, who signed as a free agent in March, after long-time face-of-the-franchise Derek Carr was released in February — signed a surprising contract waiver with the Raiders.
What’s more, according to reports since the weekend, the Raiders at any point until next January may terminate Jimmy G’s contract for any reason related to those foot injuries, unless he is able to pass a physical. If Garoppolo indeed is unable to go, or play effectively, and the Raiders do want Brady to unretire, and he’s anxious to do just that, then the latest the Raiders probably would want to execute that blockbuster option, at least prior to the regular season kicking off in early September, would be mid-August. That would give Brady at least a few weeks to digest enough of head coach and chief offensive strategist Josh McDaniels’ attack, and familiarize himself with his receivers, etc.
