What do TikTok, Beyoncé and a Canadian senator have in common? Senators are using the popular video-sharing platform to engage young Canadians who may feel under-represented in politics.

OTTAWA—When your average Canadian thinks about the Senate, a few words might come to mind: old, outdated, impenetrable.

Clement — who posted her first video last July and now has more than 1,000 followers — is only the most recent senator to sign up for TikTok. Sen. Kim Pate joined the social media platform in 2021 and now has more than 97,000 followers, while Sen. Gigi Osler, who has also been on TikTok since 2020, has attracted more than 35,000 followers. Both Clement and Pate share a range of videos explaining how the Senate works, what they think of certain bills and their thoughts on the news of the day.

“There’s a lot of joking that goes on,” said Meldrum, a long-time aide to Clement dating back to her days as mayor of Cornwall in 2018. “We are often in a position of explaining trends that we don’t understand fully either.” “We have responsibility to be working for the future of young people” said Pate, who has been a senator since 2016. She suggested some communities are often intentionally ignored or overlooked by elected officials.

The legislation that goes through the Senate affects all communities, not just one age group, Clement said, adding it is a senator’s job to reach young people. “The point of having gender parity and diversity in the Senate is to reflect the community. We don’t reflect that — very young people — in the Senate,” she said.

Clement cited her exchanges on social media about Bill C-11 as an example of how engaging with young Canadians impacts her role as a senator. Born and raised in Montreal, Clement became the first Black female mayor in Ontario after being elected in Cornwall in 2018. “Those efforts are a positive way to fight against cynicism and disengagement towards political institutions.”
