A lecture and an exhibit about the West Philippine Sea will be happening this week at the National Library of the Philippines ."Story of our Seas: The West Philippine Sea in a Historical and Political Perspective" will be held on July 5, 1 p.
m., at the NLP Epifanio de los Santos Auditorium.The lecture is organized by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines , through the Museo El Deposito, the Museum of Philippine Maritime History, and the NLP, as part of its KwenTubigan Lecture Series.Retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio, who was among the Filipino officials who led the Philippines' arbitral tribunal victory against China eight years ago, is one of the speakers of the lecture. He will also be joined by Senior State Counsel Atty. Fretti Ganchoon from the Department of Justice.Aside from the "Story of our Seas" lecture, the photo exhibition "Pag-asa sa Gitna ng Kalayaan" will also open on the same day.The exhibit offers a glimpse of the state of the West Philippine Sea and of Filipinos living on Kalayaan Island, Palawan. It features Paul Quiambao's photos from a WPS expedition, as well as a selection of maps from the NLP Cartographic Collection.The two events, according to the NHCP, are part of the commission and the NLP's mission to enrich the public's knowledge about the country's rights over WPS and to mark the eighth anniversary of the arbitration ruling that upheld the Philippines' sovereignty over WPS.It can be remembered that on July 12, 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines over China's historical claims in the South China Sea.Those who wish to attend the lecture and exhibit opening may register through this link.
