Held to a draw by Romanian GM Ioan-Cristian Chirila in Round 4, So vaulted into the upper half with 3.0 points following a victory over Armenian GM Aram Hakobyan in Round 5. Seeded 11th among 182 bets, So shared 47th to 71st places in the 13-round Swiss System rapid section of the $1.43-million event being staged in the US for the first time. Barbosa, the 2019 New York state champion, dropped his assignments against FIDE Master Alexandros Papasimapoulos, International Master Arystan Isanzhulov, and IM Vuk Damjanovic before trouncing Candidate Master Emir Sharshenbekov and GM Felix Blohberger for 2.0 points.
