Kara Friesen, of Piecemeal Food Provisions, hosted a fascinating evening recently where four farmers and a food advocate discussed the future of food in the Annapolis Valley. | SaltWire
Graham aims to till less and shared the success he’s found using big rolls of cardboard, instead of plastic, to mulch his strawberries. Cardboard means less weeding and virtually no disease-carrying insects.“We try not to till,” he said, “and we use organic mulches,” like seaweed and rhubarb leaves.
Byrka, at Revival Seeds, is keeping careful data about temperatures and pollination to plot the future. The young are interested in working, he noted, “and diversity is the key. We need a lot more work to get a lot healthier.” As Patricia Bishop, of Taproot Farm in Port Williams, says, “when you join our CSA you join in a relationship. We don’t want to become wealthy, we want to build an equitable food model where we acknowledge our responsibility to how we grow food and how we treat and pay the people who grow our food.”
If you aren’t talented in cooking root vegetables, like parsnips and beets, Piecemeal makes a ton of sense. Fiona Lewis provides the recipes, spice blends and sauces hand-in-hand with local produce. Trained at Lasalle College in Montreal, she offers a fresh approach to cooking local. I was impressed with Lewis’ talent back in August when she catered at a book launch.
