This late-winter sun marks the beginning of the end of winter
After what's been a grey, windy winter, the talk around the water cooler gives thanks to the sun. "I don't mind the cold, as long as it comes with some sun," I hear frequently. It's funny how minus double-digit temperatures can seem tolerable with sunshine in our face; meanwhile, warmer temps with clouds and that damp east wind can go right through us.
It also marks the time of year when a human forecaster can beat the computer models. When the sun comes out, it can create heat that modern-day weather models seem to miss - sending daytime highs several degrees warmer than expected. We'll see some sunshine between a few clouds and snowflakes this weekend - but when it's out, it's working hard to turn us toward Spring.
