At 92 years old, Ethel Cottreau says she never thought she’d have the opportunity to place Canadian flags on the veterans’ graves of her family members. | SaltWire

YARMOUTH COUNTY, NS – At 92 years old, Ethel Cottreau says she never thought she’d have the opportunity to place Canadian flags on the veterans’ graves of her family members.

The first two graves she marked with a Canadian flag were that of her father, L/Cpl Robert John Amirault of the West Nova Scotia Regiment who served in the Second World War and her oldest sister Phyllis Rose Amirault, a member of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps during the Second World War. She also placed a flag at the grave of her uncle, veteran Elie Dennis DeViller.

Legionnaire Todd Muise said placing the flags on graves, and also having families involved in this show of respect, is deeply meaningful.“I’m hoping to get it out to the public even more so that we have more family members come and they can place a flag themselves,” he added. The graves visited on Nov. 5 were amongst 20 cemeteries the Wedgeport Legion visited during Remembrance Week events leading up to Nov. 11’s Remembrance Day. The legion was placing around 595 Canada flags at veterans’ graves.Students of École Wedgeport, École Belleville and Plymouth School helped legionnaires, veterans, members of the public and members of the Yarmouth 84th Field Battery in placing Canadian flags at some of the cemeteries.

The trio had posed for a similar photo a few years ago. TINA COMEAU PHOTO “Thanks to the Community Dividend Fund provided by Scotian Wind Inc. and Watts Wind II Limited Partnership, the Festival acadien de Wedgeport, with the approval of the family, changed the inscription of the tombstone,” says the Wedgeport Legion. “The panel was installed on Friday, Nov. 4, by DeMone Monuments.”
