The first time Rick laid eyes on Heidi, she was lying in a kennel looking completely defeated.
“Unfortunately, that caught fire,” Rick said. “She was feral at the time and had kittens and she lost her kittens in the fire. It broke my heart.”“That’s how she got the name Heidi … all she does is hide,” Rick said.“She was going to get some cuddles. That was it,” Rick said. “From there on … all she did was want to cuddle and slowly got better and better to the point where she was very relaxed.
Despite all their efforts, Heidi decided she would return on her own terms and in her own time, when she walked up to the Humane Services building on Higgin’s Line.On February 23, Humane Services St. John’s wrote a Facebook post about a “miracle reunion” between the Fennemore’s and Heidi. “They showed us a picture, but after being gone for nearly three years, the picture didn’t really look like her. You feel your heart sink a little bit,” Rick said. “As soon as I said her name, she turned around, came out and cuddled right up to me.”“Very rarely do you get a true second chance and that was an honest-to-God second chance. It blew me away. We were so appreciative,” he said.
