A small yet vocal group is calling on the province to find a way to reduce wildlife collisions after a number of moose were struck and killed by motorists this year

Karen Marinich’s husband thought he was a goner a few months ago when he suddenly came into the path of a moose at the bottom of Mile Hill while driving back home to Batchawana Bay one night.

The demonstration went ahead as planned, despite Marinich being told by a Ministry of Transportation employee that police were being called. Grassroots efforts have started to unfold since SooToday reported on a wildlife collision that killed a moose and totalled a pickup truck earlier this month. A recent online petition calling for the construction of a wildlife bridge at the bottom of Mile Hill has gained considerable traction, collecting more than 1,400 signatures since it was launched this past weekend.

David Howson has been in the transportation industry for four decades. The semi-retired driver says the dark soil, along with the dense forest and swampland along either side of the highway, all add up to what he calls a "black hole" for drivers approaching the Mile Hill area at night. Sheehan told the handful of people at the protest that as a member of Sault Ste. Marie city council back in the mid-to-late 2000s, he worked with the local media, Sault Ste. Marie Safe Communities Partnership and others in order to launch an awareness campaign alerting drivers to the potential for wildlife crossing Highway 17 North.
