Tasmania's commission of inquiry into child sexual abuse sheds light on a litany of failures, with allegations covered up, ignored, or not believed. The premier has committed to change but has a big job ahead of him, writes Adam Langenberg.
The government has identified a site at Pontville as the preferred location for a new detention centre and committed to a suite of measures to improve safety at Ashley in the meantime, including CCTV upgrades and body-worn cameras.
Other key recommendations include rebuilding the out-of-home care system from the ground up and outsourcing it to non-government organisations, a move that's sure to attract a fair bit of controversy and pushback. There are also plenty of incredibly important procedural reforms that will take a lot of time to implement — like reviewing all allegations held by the Department of Education, Children and Young People, overhauling state service disciplinary processes, and fixing communication between departments and bodies like the Teachers Registration Board.
