We have been accusing the youth of today of disloyalty for decades. But what about the reverse?
Loyalty is a two-way street. Much has been written about the disloyalty of the younger generation, with supposedly are fickle users who will jump ship to a new employer at the drop of their straw trilby.
Much of the rhetoric around the next generation of employees these days is aimed at helping, for a fee, the old fuddy-duddy managers better understand how to engage and retain young staff. What is far less common is any appreciation that one of the most powerful ways in which those in senior roles can enjoy the loyalty of younger staff is to act as a patron.
Patrons have your back. They can protect little Caesar from the Brutus’ and brutes looking to stick the knife in. Patrons occupy the higher echelons of the business. The corner offices of the executive floor offer a view of the bigger organisational picture, and they can tell which way the wind is blowing. Invaluable intelligence for an ambitious younger player who can leverage the information to their advantage.Having friends in high places does not go unnoticed.
Patrons must be loyal too. They have a responsibility to those they are nurturing. However, inevitably circumstances can cause patrons to move on. When they do, the political calculations alter, and frequently the locks on the doors are changed. What seemed like a clear runway, is now blocked.A loss of patronage in an organisation should be regarded by the smart players as a strong signal that it is also time to move.
