KIRK STARRATTKENTVILLE, N.S. — Every piece on display as part of a unique wartime knitting exhibit in Kentville tells a personal story of remembrance and recognition.

For example, Meldrum’s great-uncle, Robert DeWitt DeWinter, served with the 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards and was killed at Villanova, Italy, on Dec. 13, 1944. Kings County Museum curator Ellen Lewis and Four Seasons Fibre Group members Marie Meldrum and Valerie Perrin with several historically accurate knitted items that tell stories of remembrance and recognition. The textiles are on display as part of a war time knitting exhibit. KIRK STARRATTThrough the experience, Perrin has gained a greater appreciation of how knitting patterns, yarn and techniques have evolved over the decades.

The mill, which has been in operation for 165 years, was able to provide three appropriate weights and colours of yarn and gave the group a discount. She said that when Meldrum approached her with the idea for the exhibit, Lewis was “blown away” by the project the group had undertaken, and with how touching it was.
