While that’s true, Chretien and all other speakers understood this celebration was not about anywhere else in Canada than Mississauga. McCallion is the one who envisioned it, designed it, nurtured it and led it for 36 years. “It’s the finest city in Canada,” said third-term Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie, adding the “architect” Hazel was the “reason so many of us made our homes here and raised our families here.”
Many residents were amongst the estimated 2,500 who attended the funeral that felt like part birthday party, part roast, part celebration and part political rally. In other words, as McCallion’s close friend and MC Jim Murray teased, it was exactly the way she would have planned it.Article content
