Expert advice and the top tips for transitioning to silver locks.
Growing out grey hair, especially if you’ve been colouring your locks for years, is easier said than done: no one wants to see an ever-expanding landing strip on their part line. If you’re not sure that you’re ready to embrace grey, try a temporary option like Mehron MakeupIf you’re transitioning to grey, have your colourist apply colour using foils with highlights and lowlights. Highlights are lighter than your base shade and add brightness to your hair.
Lowlights are darker than your base, so if you have light hair your stylist will probably use light brown or auburn lowlights to break up your lighter strands. This will help you transition to grey hair by creating multi-tonal hair colour. If you have a darker base, your stylist might opt for dark coffee to create contrast.
There are pluses in terms of time and money in transitioning to silver. California-based colourist Jack Martin says, “My clients with naturally grey hair come two or three times a year, instead of every few weeks.”that he starts by using a colour extractor to remove any remaining artificial colour. Then, leaving the grey roots intact, he bleaches the rest of the head to prep hair for the new silver colour.
