Each year, the IWMF honors journalists who have been unjustly imprisoned for their work. The recipients of this year's awards include Frenchie Mae Cumpio, receiving the Justice for Women Journalists Award, and four other courageous journalists from Iran, Georgia Fort of the United States, and Myanmar. Notably, all honorees are independent journalists working without the institutional protections or legal resources often available to major media organizations. Frenchie Mae, prior to her arrest in 2020, previously worked for Eastern Vista and a local radio station in Tacloban City. Her advocacy for marginalized and oppressed sectors through community journalism has inspired various advocacies and calls for her release.
