'We gather on this day to remember, honour, grieve and demand answers for Indigenous communities and survivors across Canada.' - Autumn Wilson, Indigenous Women's Anti-Violence Task Force

The Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit and Gender-Diverse Persons is an annual reminder of how tragedies affecting the Indigenous Peoples are often swept under the rug by law enforcement, media and the judicial system in Canada.

“This march is also a time to stand in solidarity with the families whose loved ones have gone missing and been murdered across Canada and beyond, and call for justice.” “It’s time for us to even say stronger words to the colonial government here that we as a people will protect our women. We will continue to recognize ourselves as the sovereign people here.”

“Indigenous shelters across Canada have been underfunded since their inception, leading to the most vulnerable — which includes many Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people — to become targets of gender-based violence and death,” said Solomon. “To this, we in Garden River say no more.” Neveah Pine, a member of Garden River First Nation who chairs the Northern Indigenous Youth Council and serves as an Indigenous student trustee for the Algoma District School Board, called for understanding — and action — from Canada at large.
