The first serious challenge to President Vladimir Putin's 23-year leadership has drawn to a close after Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin agreed to stand down his mercenaries and leave for Belarus.
Yevgeny Prigozhin has been pictured leaving Rostov-on-Don. Picture: AP PhotoMr Lukashenko’s office released a statement shortly after the negotiations concluded, confirming Russian President Vladimir Putin’s approval of the talks and the outcome of the meeting.
"Now the moment has come when blood could be spilled … Russian blood will be spilled on one side,” he said. Criminal charges which had also been mounted against the mercenary boss for armed mutiny will also be dropped, the Kremlin confirmed, after earlier accusing Mr Prizoghin of treason. He urged his fighters to embark on a “march for justice” and called for Russia’s military leadership to be ousted and handed to him. As a result, Moscow’s mayor advised residents to stay at home as rebel mercenary vehicles were seen on the road, and all mass outdoor events until 1 July were cancelled.
