Hundreds of Indigenous residents in WA's north have potentially been living their lives unregistered, the recovery from record flooding has shown.

Many residents lost personal property and important documentation when floodwater tore through their homes.

Shire of Derby West Kimberley president Geoff Haerewa said he was shocked to learn of the number of unregistered people."It blew me away that there's people out there … with no real identification other than the name their parents gave them," he said.
