To protect our interests and uphold our values,' she added. Following his inauguration, Trump indicated he might impose 25-percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico as early as February 1st. He also announced the US withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, a move that von der Leyen defended as 'the best hope for all humanity,' vowing that 'Europe will stay the course.' '2025 marks 50 years of our Union's diplomatic relations with China. I see it as an opportunity to engage and deepen our relationship with China, and where possible, even to expand our trade and investment ties,' von der Leyen stated. China and Ukraine are closely monitoring Trump's second term. Following a phone conversation with Trump last Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his hope for a 'good start' to relations with the new administration. While Trump has indicated his intention to impose sweeping trade penalties against China, he has also signaled a desire to improve ties, even reversing a US ban on the Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok on national security grounds. Ukraine, led by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is also watching closely, hoping for Trump's support in achieving a 'just peace' in the ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelenskyy is expected to call on world leaders and business executives to maintain and even intensify their support for Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression.
