Volkswagen unveils the production-ready ID. Cross electric crossover featuring a practical design, competitive pricing, and enhanced interior quality as the automaker navigates brand divestments and factory closures to stay competitive.
Volkswagen is facing significant strategic challenges as it navigates a competitive landscape dominated by Chinese automakers and grapples with tariffs and supply chain cost pressures.
Reports from Germany indicate that the VW Group may divest luxury brands like Lamborghini and Ducati, close several factories, and streamline its model lineup to focus only on the most profitable vehicles. This follows the earlier sale of Bugatti. Against this backdrop, the company is launching the production version of the Volkswagen ID. Cross, an electric crossover that aims to recapture market enthusiasm.
The ID. Cross, previously seen as a concept, retains much of its original design with minor adjustments such as smaller 21-inch rims and a darker interior ambiance compared to the concept's 'sunny beach holiday' theme. The interior showcases a return to user-friendly design with physical buttons on the steering wheel and center console, addressing criticisms of previous touch-sensitive interfaces.
Powered by a single front-mounted motor, the base model features a 37kWh battery with 114hp or 133hp output, while the 52kWh version boosts power to 208hp-surpassing the Mk5 Golf GTI-and extends the estimated range from 315km to around 435km. Volkswagen has emphasized practicality in the ID. Cross, adding a 25-liter storage well under the hood for the charging cable and a spacious 475-liter cargo area.
The brand markets the rear compartment as ideal for storing items like a crate of beer, highlighting its versatility. Pricing starts below £25,000 (approximately P2.1 million) to compete with rivals such as the Kia EV2 and BYD Atto 2. The EV comes as Volkswagen phases out less popular combustion models like the Taigo and T-Cross, relying on the T-Roc for mainstream sales. With the recent debut of the ID.
Polo, Polo GTI, and an improved ID.3, the ID. Cross represents a critical part of Volkswagen's effort to revitalize its electric vehicle lineup and regain market share amid broader corporate restructuring. The production model appears more mature and spacious than earlier ID. series vehicles, with improved trim materials, signaling a renewed focus on quality and customer appeal
