Canada had 874 homicides last year, a fourth consecutive rise year on year

Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index, which measures police-reported crime, was up four per cent overall last year.a five-per-cent increase in 2022, following a six-per-cent increase in 2021. The 531,243 violent incidents reported in 2022 are a 39-per-cent increase over the 382,115 reported in 2015, when a nine-year downward trend in violent crime began to reverse.

The data, released Thursday, show crimes involving the use of firearms in a threatening or violent manner in 2022 were up for the eighth consecutive year, four-per-cent higher than 2021, and are 60 per cent higher than they were 2013. Firearms crimes related to possession, storage and handling were stable last year, the statistics agency said, after several prior years of increases.Article content

Firearm threats, including pointing a gun or shooting, have increased about 101 per cent from 2015 to 2022, the agency’s annual crime figures show. Police in Canada recorded an eight-per-cent increase in homicides over 2021. The 874 homicides recorded last year now mark the fourth year of consecutive increases. Atpopulation, the homicide rate is now the highest it has been since 1992. The rise was driven in part by notable increases in homicides in B.C., Quebec and Manitoba. The highest murder rates in the country continued to be in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
