Vimy Ridge Public School is not unique. There have been warning signs about a rise in violent and aggressive behaviour among elementary students against both fellow students and staff.

Her son told her about a recent incident when one child and his cousins were ganging up on other children and asking them if they were Muslim.A third Vimy Ridge mom, whose name is also being withheld to protect the child’s privacy, said her son has been targeted by groups of students with bullying and violence all year.
These are only three of a growing number of alarming stories reported by parents at Vimy Ridge Public School who are calling for action against violence and bullying. The parents interviewed by this newspaper said they do not blame the teachers at Vimy Ridge. “They are kind, caring and trying their best,” said Aune.
School staff are “focused on building positive relationships and supporting children to develop strategies to resolve conflict between one another,” said the statement. And personalized supportMeanwhile, “any incidents of violence or bullying will be taken seriously and enforced following the full extent of the school’s progressive discipline policy.” said the statement.
The pandemic, which brought isolation, disrupted schooling and massive doses of screen time for children, has made things worse. The school in the fast-growing suburb is stuffed with nearly double the number of students it was built to house.A row of 23 portable classrooms sits in the middle of the large playground.
The reliance on portable classrooms is frustrating for parents who say schools aren’t built quickly enough to keep pace with the housing boom in suburbs. “It will take time and yes parents are right to be angry, but we as parents forget that there are always two sides of the story. Parents are not at the school when behaviours happen and from experience, I can say I have been on both sides of my child being bullied and being part of the bullying.”
