Hundreds of thousands of Victorians remain without power, as clean-up efforts reveal the damage left behind by destructive bushfires and storms which hit the state on Tuesday.
The energy market operator says it could take days, and possibly weeks, to restore electricity to some of the 270,000 properties still without power.In a spot of good news, our reporters at Dadswell Bridge have told us that the iconic Giant Koala is still standing and undamaged.
"The fire circumnavigated us a bit, but it’s caused a few other friends and neighbours quite a bit of property damage," he said.His property was pretty much burnt out by bushfires 10 years ago, whereas some of the people whose properties were worst affected this time "missed it all" in 2014.
A parent says buses have gone out and some of the college's approximately 1600 students have arrived at the school, and are being supervised by teachers, but the lack of power meant they were not in classes. “The situation is evolving quickly, but schools are making every effort to provide information to families as quickly as they can and where possible are providing supervision for students where they need it.”Hundreds of thousands of Victorians are still without electricity following storms across the state on Tuesday.
Firefighters were continuing to battle two blazes on Wednesday morning but are welcoming eased conditions, with lower temperatures and wind helping firefighting efforts.He said the CFA was focused on clearing roads and ensuring properties were safe before families returned home. He evacuated the family home and as of 8.30am was sheltering with his family in Stawell waiting to hear whether the house was still standing.
