Under pressure Victorian Liberal leader John Pesutto has swatted away criticism from a top UN official about his treatment of expelled Liberal Moira Deeming, saying he was more focused on the state's budget.
The UN's Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls Reem Alsalem has commented on the Victorian Liberal Party's treatment of Moira Deeming
In her maiden speech to Victoria's parliament, Ms Deeming criticised gender affirmation practices for transgender people, saying her term would focus on "sex-based rights". "I am disturbed by the frequent tactic of smear campaigns against women, girls and their allies on the basis of their beliefs on non-discrimination based on sex and same-sex relations," Ms Alsalem said.
She said she felt vindicated that the UN had called out her treatment, but said it was "cold comfort". "I do not understand the argument used by the Liberal Party of Australia, unless I am missing something." In her statement published on May 22, Ms Alsalem said she had "particular concern" about the "various forms of reprisals against women, including censorship, legal harassment, [and] employment loss."

‘Difficult pill to swallow’: ‘Big hit’ towards Victorian businesses following state budgetVictoria Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Paul Guerra says there’s “quite a big hit” across the board in Victoria following the state government handing down its budget on Tuesday. “It’s a bit tough if you’re a medium business, a large business, or a landowner at the moment – you're going to pay more come July 1, and that’s going to be a really difficult pill to swallow for a lot of businesses across the state,” he told Sky News Australia. Mr Guerra said businesses for the next ten years are going to “take a hit” repaying the COVID debt levy, which will result in some choosing not to continue working in Victoria and job losses. “The debt did need to be reduced – sticking it just to business though is not the right approach here,” he said.

‘Fallout’ from Victorian state budget ‘continues’: CredlinYesterday's Victorian state budget is a shameless attack on business, property owners and private schools, and the fallout continued today, says Sky News host Peta Credlin. “And because the Andrews government is usually a model for Labor everywhere, it's a grim foretaste of what may come to other states across our federation,' she said. Ms Credlin said because it can't stop its spending, the Andrews government is “effectively broke”. “But rather than change, it's hitting the most productive people, and punishing aspiration, so that it can keep bribing key constituencies. “The extraordinary thing about this budget is that, despite all the new taxes, it actually doesn't tackle debt – debt's expected to hit $170 billion, with an interest bill that will rise to $8 billion a year.'
