The Victorian Labor Party is expected to expel one of its MPs after she supported Adem Somyurek in referring Premier Daniel Andrews to be investigated over the infamous red shirts scandal.
Parliament was rocked when Western Metropolitan MP Kaushaliya Vaghela sensationally crossed the floor to vote with her former factional ally. However, Labor Party rules forbid members from crossing the floor against party positions, which will likely see Ms Vaghela expelled from caucus.
“The rules of the party are very clear but let’s wait and see if that’s necessary,” Mr Andrews told reporters.Ms Vaghela outlined why she crossed the floor and said that branch stacking was “endemic in the ALP”. “Branch stacking is endemic in the ALP, and I understand it has been for decades, therefore what happened at IBAC was a grave injustice because it was discriminatory.”
A spokesman for Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass said the Legislative Council’s referral will be considered. “It would be totally inappropriate - given that these matters are now for the Ombudsman - for me to be commenting on these issues,” he said.
