Victoria wants all its key identity and verified credentials to be stored on a secure government platform and not Google or Apple, as part of a roll-out of a new smart digital licence system.

Wallets are fast becoming redundant, with Victoria beginning trials on a smart electronic driver’s licence following a similar rollout in NSW and South Australia.

Scanning will automatically reveal if a licence has been revoked or suspended, but it will still be available to prove identity or age when it is not active. After frustrating delays because of COVID-19, Government Services Minister Danny Pearson said: “This is just sensational. It gives me goosebumps – it’s not just the weather, it is so good.

Drivers would have a choice to use a digital licence or continue with a physical card. P and L plate drivers will still be required to carry their physical licence. The Victorian digital licence will be available on the Service Victoria app and the VicRoads website. Mr Pearson said he did not want government credentials to be posted to private phone apps such as the digital wallets of Apple or Google.

“Citizens would want the government to be held accountable for the way in which the data is treated rather than sending it off to a big tech organisation like Apple or Google, no offence to either entities.”The rollout of the digital licence was delayed after the government created a joint venture with a private-sector consortium to take over and manage driver’s licences and motor registrations.A consortium of Aware Super, Australian Retirement Trust and Macquarie Asset Management paid $7.

“My vision for Service Victoria down the track is you’ll have every single identity credential, like working with children check, your driver’s licence and having all your registrations, so you have your teacher’s licence or your plumbing certificate, and you’ll be able to make the payments to government on it,” Mr Pearson said.

the plan is for the Victorian licence to be able to be used with other Australian jurisdictions as well.
